🛞 How to Clean Your Wheels and Tyres Safely

Get rid of brake dust, grime, and restore that deep black tyre shine

Wheels are one of the dirtiest parts of any vehicle, constantly exposed to road grime and brake dust. Cleaning them correctly not only improves appearance but also prevents corrosion and damage over time.

🧰 What You’ll Need:

Dedicated wheel cleaner (acid-free for safety)

Iron fallout remover (for embedded brake dust)

Tyre cleaner or APC (All-Purpose Cleaner)

Soft-bristle wheel brush

Tyre brush

Separate microfiber mitt (don’t use your body mitt!)

Microfiber towel for drying

Tyre dressing or gel (optional)

🧼 Step-by-Step Wheel & Tyre Cleaning Process

1. Rinse the Wheels Thoroughly

Use a pressure washer or strong stream of water to knock off loose dirt, brake dust, and grime.

✅ Always clean wheels before the body to avoid cross-contamination.

2. Apply Wheel Cleaner

Spray your wheel cleaner generously onto the face and barrel of the wheel. Let it dwell 1–2 minutes, but don’t let it dry.

3. Remove Embedded Iron Deposits

If you see purple/red runoff, that’s iron fallout being broken down. You can use a dedicated iron remover here for deep decontamination (great for European vehicles with high brake dust).

4. Agitate with Brushes

Use a soft wheel brush for spokes and barrel

Use a detailing brush for lug nuts and corners

Clean the brake caliper if visible

5. Scrub the Tyres

Use a stiffer tyre brush and tyre cleaner or APC. You’ll know they’re clean when the foam turns from brown to white.

6. Rinse Again Thoroughly

Remove all cleaner and grime. Ensure no residue is left behind that could damage the surface or fling up during driving.

7. Dry and Dress

Dry wheels with a microfiber towel or air blower.

Apply tyre dressing for that satin or glossy finish.

Buff off any excess to prevent sling.

💡 Pro Tips:

Don’t use acidic wheel cleaners on uncoated or polished alloys.

Use a separate mitt and towels just for wheels.

Apply ceramic wheel coating for easier future cleaning.

Never apply tyre shine to treads — only sidewalls.

🏁 Summary

A properly cleaned wheel and tyre combo transforms your car’s overall look. Done regularly, this step prevents long-term damage and keeps your ride looking freshly detailed.
